BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS Stories have always made history come alive for Sybil. She states: "I've been particularly fascinated with the history of the west. Growing up, I could imagine how it might have been for kids who lived in the mining towns and on the ranchesthe danger and excitement. And so when my own kids were in school, Jane Valentine Barker and I decided to write books for kids about kids in the west. We wanted the stories to be short enough for kids to read easily. We also agreed that the stories would have to show what boys and girls of all cultures actually did. The result was the award-winning Colorado Heritage series." Each book in the Heritage series is comprised of four stories all built around a central theme (Happy Harvest is about ranching & farming, Mesas to Mountains is about Native Americans in Colorado) and features a young girl or boy as the central figure or narrator in each tale. The following volumes comprise the Colorado Heritage series: Mountain Treasures, Happy Harvest, Trappers and Traders, Mesa to Mountains; Adventures in the West; Magic, Mystery, and Mountains; Building Up; Settling Down; Wagons and Rails, and Beauty in the Rock. Information on buying the books in these series can be found on Amazon. Sybil and Jane were also fascinated with women in the west whose amazing accomplishments were not always recognized in history books. Two of these were Florence Sabin, a pioneer scientist, and Martha Maxwell, a pioneer naturalist. They both became the heroines of the two-book Women of the West series. Information on buying the books in these series can be found on Amazon. Sybil and Jane wrote a young adult novel, Crown of Life, about the famous mystery writer Mary Roberts Rinehart. Based on her letters and personal papers, the book is the fictionalized story of Mary Roberts Rinehart's life from her decision to go to nursing school in spite of her parents' objections to her eventual marriage to Dr. Rinehart, her months on the western front during World War I as the only woman correspondent, to her adventure through Glacier National Park. Crown of Life is available through The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group. |
